Farewell, YES Mag and KNOW

As I mentioned last post, these two fabulous magazines are done. I'm angry and sad. Angry at how it all came to a screeching halt thanks to the new owners and so very sad for Shannon Hunt and David Garrison who started YES Mag on a table in their basement suite 16 years ago and built the company to two excellent, award-winning science magazines for children with a healthy subscriber base in Canada and beyond. I loved my six years working for KNOW, helping launch a new magazine taught me an awful lot. I'm sorry for my colleagues who are now out of work, but they're a talented bunch and will, no doubt, spring back. And then there were the dozens of artists and writers I had the pleasure of working with over the years. Here is a post from one of those talented people, Glen Mullaly, who I worked with on almost every issue of the magazine.

I am also very sorry for our fabulous and loyal readers who so appreciated that science was not dry and dull, but interesting, endlessly engaging, and, a lot of the time, a whole lot of fun.

I think the new owners are rotten thieves - took subscriptions 13.01.12 for a magazine to start arriving March/April 2012 knowing they were going under!
I feel for the staff but I also feel for the grandparents who have been ripped off and the disappointment of small children who thought they were getting a decent present.

I can do one better, "Anonymous!" Mad Science Group took my money on January 21. And a google search shows they were closing a subscription groupon deal on January 24. I'm still fighting with Visa to get a refund as I narrowly missed the 89-day limit to file a fraud complaint.

"Tough City Writer," thanks for this post. I'm sorry that so many people lost their means of employment, but I appreciate the information given here.

Thank you for all your dedication and hard work on the Yes and Know magazines. I was very sad to find out that I cannot order it for my nieces and nephews this year. My own children loved it to pieces. In our opinion, it was the best kids magazine out there.

All the best in your new endeavors.

I am speechless. THE best science magazine for kids. Not like the others where they call it kid science magazine but only full of pictures and silly stories. I can't accept...just can't. I would be happy with an online version as well. Or can't they just sell the old issues? My kids read these so many times, the old ones are torn and gone by now. I want KNOW and YES mag back!!!!!!
